Utah by Garry Winogrand (1964)

The photograph titled “Utah” by artist Garry Winogrand was taken in the year 1964. It is a black and white image that appears to be taken from the inside of a vehicle, looking out through the windshield. The windshield is dirty and speckled with spots that are visible due to the sunlight streaming through. The perspective creates a distinct foreground where the interior of the car frames the scene.

In the image, we see a section of a two-lane road set in a landscape that suggests a mountainous or hilly region, with the sides of mountains or large hills visible on either side of the road. Most notably, there is a deer, or a similar large animal, in the middle of the road and a vintage car is behind it in the same lane, possibly having just swerved or stopped to avoid a collision. The animal appears to be in motion, maybe leaping or running across the road. The photograph captures a moment of sudden action and potential danger, a snapshot of an unexpected encounter on a seemingly quiet road. It encapsulates Winogrand’s knack for capturing the unpredictability and spontaneity found in everyday life.
